Public Hearing Notification
Alpine Utilities is a small private utility that operates a wastewater treatment plant that discharges into Stoop Creek, a tributary to the lower Saluda River. Alpine Utilities has been responsible for a number of discharge violations, including a well publicized sewage discharge in the summer of 2008.
DHEC is proposing to reissue the discharge permit for Alpine Utilities and has scheduled a public hearing to seek public input on the reissuance of this permit.
The public hearing will take place on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Peeples Auditorium at DHEC’s 2600 Bull Street location. Before the hearing, at 6:00 pm, DHEC will hold an informal meeting to summarize the draft permit and answer questions.
The public will be able voice their comments at the hearing itself and written comments can be submitted no later than Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Written comments must be submitted to:
Mohammed Siddiqui
Bureau of Water
2600 Bull St.
Columbia, SC 29201
Congaree Riverkeeper will be submitting comments and will soon release a facts sheet as well as Congaree Riverkeeper’s positions on the reissuance of this discharge permit. This is an important issue that could have an impact on the community’s ability to enjoy the lower Saluda River for recreation. Please check back in the next week or so for a detailed facts sheet to help you prepare your comment for DHEC.
